The FOSS4G-SEA (Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial) Southeast Asia was held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia 18-19 July, 2012 in conjunction with the AGSE 2012 conference. Over 50 participants came together to discuss the latest development of Open-Source Geospatial technologies and how they can be applied to society and environments.
Dr. Tuong-Thuy Vu of School of Geography, University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus (UNMC) delivered a keynote on the new initiative of establishment OSGEO research laboratories worldwide following the MoU between OSGEO foundation and International Cartographic Association (ICA), which can be seen here (http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/MOU_ICA).
To develop a stronger OSGEO communities in Malaysia, the first meeting of OSGEO Malaysia local chapter was called during the conference. Twenty initial members signed up and discussed the objectives and activities of the local chapter, and also set up an OSGEO Malaysia local chapter Facebook page. Further discussion will be carried out online for the way forward, and we welcome all OSGEO developers and users in Malaysia to join us and look forward to meeting you all at the first OSGEO Malaysia local chapter workshop in 2013.
