Developing skills for working in Public Relations

About the module

This module is available to all registered University of Nottingham Students. 

This module will enable students to recognise the importance of the skills they are developing through activities at the Alumni and Donor Relations Office (ADRO). 


Aims and objectives 

This module aims to enable students to recognise the skills they are developing whilst volunteering at ADRO. Knowledge, understanding and skills that will be developed or furthered through the module include: 

  • Professional communication skills including telephone skills and etiquette
  • Identification and usage of research sources - desktop research, to
    build stakeholder database/profile for stakeholder engagement
  • Image building and promotion using digital media
  • Events management - local and trans-boundary
  • Creative and critical thinking
  • Planning and management
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Time management 


This module involves 

Students will attend 1 workshop with module convener at the beginning
and conduct practical activity throughout the module period. The workshop will include public relations theories, concepts and features of success
stories. Practical activity includes spending 3 to 4 hours a week at ADRO office to use office facilities and for guidance/mentoring. The final
evaluation will include submitting the log book and presentation to a panel.
