A Research Affiliate with the Centre for Islamic Business and Finance Research (CIBFR) at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, Professor M Kabir Hassan, has been honoured with the prestigious IDB Prize in Islamic Banking & Finance by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
The Islamic Development Bank is an international financial institution, established in 1973, that aims to foster the economic development and social progress of member countries. The coveted IDB Prize is awarded for 'outstanding merit in the fields of Islamic economics, banking and finance'. The IDB prize selection committee consists of eminent scholars and experts in the areas of Islamic banking and finance. The Prize includes a citation acknowledging the contribution of the winner, and a cash award of USD47,000.
Professor Hassan was presented the award at the opening ceremony of the 41st IDB Board of Governors Annual Meeting, held on 17 May 2016 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The award was presented by IDB President Dr. Ahmed Mohammad Ali Al Madani, Indonesian Vice President H E Muhammad Jusef Kalla, the third Indonesian President H E Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, Indonesian Minister of Finance H E Bambang Brodjonegoro, Indonesian Central Bank Governor H E Agus Martowardojo and the Chairman of the Financial Services Authority of Indonesia, H E Dr Muliaman D Hadad.
Professor Hassan is Professor of Finance in the Department of Economics and Finance in the University of New Orleans, where he currently holds two endowed Chairs - Hibernia Professor of Economics and Finance, and Bank One Professor in Business. He was a visiting professor at CIBFR from 25 to 29 November 2015, where he presented papers on Islamic finance and international finance.
