NUBS academic presents at prestigious Islamic Finance conference

The Eighth International Conference on Islamic Economics and Finance was held at The Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha, Qatar from 19th to 21st December 2011. The Conference was jointly organized by the Qatar Foundation's Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS) through its Islamic Economics and Finance Centre, the Islamic Development Bank Group through its Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI), the International Association for Islamic Economics, and the Statistical, Economic & Social Research & Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), with the support of other stakeholders.

The conference is among the most prestigious academic events in the Islamic finance discipline, and has made a significant contribution to conceptualizing the theory and practice of contemporary Islamic economics and finance through research and intellectual dialogue.

Dr Nafis Alam, Assistant Professor of Finance at NUBS Malaysia, presented a paper entitled “Resilience of Islamic Finance During Credit Crunch – Empirical Evidence from European Market” at this conference. The paper analysed the performance of Islamic equities with respect to overall market during the recent financial crisis. It also highlighted the significance of Islamic finance to withstand turbulent financial crisis.

The Conference provided a platform for dialogue and discussions between policymakers, academics, researchers and practitioners from leading institutions such as the Qatar Foundation, IDB, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, SESRIC and leading universities, including, Columbia, Durham, George Washington, Georgetown, Harvard, Kyoto, McGill, Nottingham, Oxford, Tilburg and Tufts. Details of the conference can be obtained here.
