Dr Nafis Alam, Assistant Professor of Finance at NUBS Malaysia, was invited to deliver a lecture at the Durham Islamic Finance Summer School 2012 at Durham University, United Kingdom. The lecture was centred on regulation and supervision in the banking sector, with a special focus on the Islamic banking industry. The lecture comes at a very timely juncture, as the global banking system goes through a rough patch with the Eurozone crisis and investigations into Barclays Bank on its role in the manipulation of the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR). Dr Alam highlighted the role of regulatory bodies and a robust supervision mechanism in avoiding banking crises and in order to establish a stable and efficient banking system.
The Durham Islamic Finance Summer School has been organized every year since 2006 by the Durham Centre for Islamic Economics and Finance (DCIEF), and is a sought-after event in the Islamic finance event calendar. Many of its Islamic economics, banking and finance graduates and participants of the Summer School have gone on to work in the Islamic finance sector or now teach Islamic economics and finance all over the world.
Over a 5-day intensive programme, the Durham Islamic Finance Summer School aims to provide knowledge, skills and expertise, and help place participants in an advantageous position for entering and working in the Islamic financial sector.
