Description

Women in Science Engineering and Technology (WINSET) invites you to

Stronger Together
A free workshop exploring the issues of gender balance for STEMM academics in Malaysian Higher Education Institutions.

Date: Wednesday 2 March 2016, 9am-6pm

Venue: University of Nottingham Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Teaching Centre

Under-representation of women in many STEMM subjects can limit the available talent pool in academia. There are multiple reasons why gender discrepancies exist, and equally strong evidence that adjustments to institutional working practices, cultures and support can help to redress this imbalance in academic workplaces.

About the Workshop

We will explore these issues in a one-day participatory workshop which aims to:

  • share experiences among academics from a range of Malaysian institutions
  • identify areas where future efforts should be focused
  • build support networks among participants

Once registered for the workshop, participants will be asked to complete an online questionnaire which will be completed one month prior to the workshop and will used to formulate a series of research themes and questions. The workshop will use discussion groups to investigate the themes in more detail.

This workshop aims to produce a novel piece of primary research which will result in a journal article publication. All participants will be invited (but not obliged) to be a co-author.

The longer-term aim of this workshop is to establish mutually beneficial and lasting support networks among academics from different institutions by engagement in this collaborative research exercise.

Who can attend?

The event is targeted at STEMM academics of any gender and career stage (postdoctoral to professorial) from Malaysian Higher Education Institutions.

Panel discussion

The day will start with a panel discussion with a selection of distinguished speakers including:

  • Datin Paduka IR. Dr. Siti Hamisah Tapsir - Deputy Director General of Higher Education (Public Sector)
  • Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Said - Vice-Chancellor and President Taylor’s University
  • Professor Dr. Noorsaadah Abd. Rahman - Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) University of Malaya
  • Dr Mahaletchumy Arujanan - Executive Director of MABIC Malaysian Biotechnology Information Center

Please register online before 5 February 2016.
