Malaysian Universities Poetry Writing Competition 2017
in conjunction with the English Language Carnival
This competition is co-organised by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia and the School of English, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
The aims of this poetry writing competition are to encourage a love of writing poetry in English among university students, to affirm it as a worthwhile literary pursuit, and to stimulate excellence in creative writing.
Rules for participation:
- All submissions must be unpublished original work (including publications in personal blogs, etc.);
- Each writer can submit a maximum of three poems;
- Each poem must not exceed 40 lines;
- Poems must be written in the English language; and
- This competition is open to both Malaysian and international under-graduate students studying in Malaysian universities from any field of study.
Entry guidelines:
- All entries must be made online through email;
- Complete the entry form which can be downloaded from below;
- All entries must be in Word document format in a single file;
- Each poem must be on a new page. The first page will the entry form. The second page onwards will
contain the title of the poem and the poem;
- Any entry that does not comply to these guidelines will be rejected;
- All entries must reach the organisers by 9 October 2017. No late entries will be accepted; and
- Email entries to MUP_competition@nottingham.edu.my.
Judging of entries:
- There will be no correspondence between the judges and the writers;
- A panel of judges will judge the entries;
- 20 poems will be long-listed;
- From the 20 poems, 10 poems will be short-listed;
- The top three winners will be chosen from the 10 short-listed poems;
- All winners will be announced at the prize-giving ceremony;
- The judges may decide not to award certain prizes at their discretion; and
- The judges’ decision is final.
Prizes:
- First prize: RM 1,000.00
- Second prize: RM 750.00
- Third prize: RM500.00
- Shortlisted poems: RM200 each
- Longlisted poems: RM100 each
